History and Origins of Exmouth Art Group

“Encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in this district”

In 1946, a group of seven artists met at a local school wishing to share skills and enthusiasms and organise joint art exhibitions. They went on to found Exmouth Art Group with the agreed aim “to encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in this district”.

Over seventy five years later and with more than 170 members, the Group keeps to this ambition.  Working in a variety of media and disciplines, using traditional and contemporary styles, some self-taught and some trained professionals and with ages ranging across the full spectrum, our members are as diverse as the mediums and techniques we utilise!   We offer a diverse range of art-based activities, including demonstrations, competitions, talks, practice sessions, workshops, exhibitions and trips.  We continue to develop and progress embracing new technology including of course digital art via apps on tablets and iPads.  We feel we are an open, dynamic and social Art Group but don’t take our word for it – come along and find out for yourself.

We meet on the first and third Tuesday evening of most months from 7pm-9pm (in the afternoons during the winter months) and hold informal practice sessions weekly on Thursdays, both at the Sea Cadets Hall on Camperdown Terrace which, adjacent to the Exe Estuary, is also a perfect location for plein air working.

Since 1955, when some members first knocked at their door asking for permission to sketch in the grounds, we have been privileged to have the unfailing support of the Lindsay-Fynn family.  Today Nigel and Heleen Lindsay-Fynn are second generation Patrons and take a close interest in the Group’s well-being, hosting a reception each year at Lee Ford, their beautiful home in Budleigh Salterton.    To see a short video of the history visit our YouTube channel here.
